The theme for the 2019 New Cumberland Patriot Camp is "From Sea to Shining Sea." Camp begins in 1801 with Thomas Jefferson’s presidency and his purchase of the Louisiana Territory, which doubled the size of America. The children will travel with Lewis and Clark on their Voyage of Discovery. Westward expansion and Manifest Destiny will lead us to the story of the Alamo and the California Gold Rush of 1849. The children will have the chance to pan for gold, as well as pass a letter from coast to coast recreating their own pony express. American exceptionalism will lead us to the creation of the telegraph, steam engine, and transcontinental railroad. As our plans continue to take hold, we hope to have modern heroes from our community talk about the importance of service in our families, communities, and country. We also will be planning a service project. Finally, we hope to finish our week by meeting Lewis and Clark, Davy Crocket, Samuel Morse and others in full costume and character who can speak to them about their public and private lives, making their stories accessible and real for our campers.
